資料の解説

明治40年頃に至るまでの雜記録。記事中にあらわれる最もはやい年代は明治32年で、執筆もその前後に始まったと考えられる。内容は宗教・博物誌・地誌・軍事・医事・語彙など実に多岐に渉り、宗教関連の記事が冒頭に集中する他は各記事が混交している。本文冒頭に「巻一」とあることからもわかるとおり、継続的にメモを続ける目的で作られたノートであろう。鴎外自装の表紙は巻一が初期のものによく見られる青表紙、巻二が大正期の茶表紙。日清戦争から小倉赴任、日露戦争の各時期に鴎外が関心を持っていたあらゆる知の様態を正確に示している。(多)
