本書は、安政2年(1855)から安政4年(1857)にかけて書かれた小島瞻淇《せんき》の日記、『日新録』からの人名の抜き書きである。全丁、鴎外の自筆。瞻淇は小島宝素の四男であり、『日新録』は『小島宝素』その十一からその十三の執筆に際して、資料として用いられた。本書も作品のこの部分と重なる点が多く、鴎外が執筆に先だって作ったノートと考えられる。依拠資料と作品との間を結ぶ、作品未成の段階を示す資料として興味深い。なお、鴎外が借覧したと考えられる富士川游旧蔵の『日新録』は、現在、慶応義塾大学医学部メディカル・センター内富士川文庫に所蔵されている。(出)
