資料の解説

『寿阿弥の手紙』の元となった書簡。寿阿弥から桑原苾堂に宛てられている。鴎外は大正4年(1915)12月31日に、吉川弘文館でこれを入手した。寿阿弥は通称真志屋五郎作といい、神田新石町の菓子商で、渋江抽斎に演劇の趣味を開かせた人物。前識語に「真志屋五郎作、曇_、空華、如是縁庵の号あり。戯号寿阿弥、二世劇神仙などゝ云ふ。此書状は文政十一年戊子二月十九日に書けるものなること多町の火事の條に徴して知るべし。五郎作時に年四十九」とあり、「四十九」に朱で「六十」と訂正がなされている。内容は、苾堂の姑の死去に弔書を送らなかった詫言、物価高騰のこと、自身が怪我をして名倉に通ったこと、店が火事にあったこと、などで『寿阿弥の手紙』作品中に触れられている通りである。(神)
