鴎外は、大正6年(1917)12月、帝室博物館館長に任ぜられた。帝室博物館には東京・京都・奈良の三館があるため、以後、鴎外はしばしば奈良を訪れている。本図も同時期に購入したものであろう。鴎外の生活圏と水路に、若干の線書込みが見える。奈良居住時代、晩年の鴎外官舎は、博物館のほど近くにあった。当地には、官舎の門構を残した「鴎外の門」が、今なお姿をとどめている。(多)
