資料の解説

ドイツの大衆作家H・クラウレンの小説『ミミリー』。1815年の4月~5月、家庭娯楽雑誌に連載された後ベストセラーとなり、女性読者を中心に「ミミリー熱」という表現が生まれ、詩や劇にも翻案された。鴎外所蔵はレクラム文庫版である。鴎外がこの小説を読んだのはドイツ留学中の1886年ごろと推定されるが、「春水々々、不図独逸国中又見汝」などの書入れから、鴎外がクラウレンのセンチメンタルな恋愛小説に春水の人情本を重ね合わせて読んでいたことがわかる。なお、後に作家のウィリアム・ハウフが『論難のための説教』という評論で『ミミリー』の文体を批判し論争を巻き起こすが(参考文献の中谷論文参照)、鴎外文庫蔵の本論文の末尾には鴎外の「bravo! 為永春水之徒亦応愧死」という書入れがある。(河)
