ワシントン・アーヴィング『スケッチ・ブック』のドイツ語訳。原文34編中32編を抄録している。原本は、著者が分冊公刊したエッセイ・短編小説・旅行記をまとめたもので、内容は、アメリカ人としての国民的意識のもと、祖先の国イギリスへの正しい認識を啓蒙する一方、新興国アメリカの誇りを表明したものである。アーヴィングについては、『文学と自然と』において「単稗」の例として引用されているが、これは『外国小説集』(Novellemschatz des Auslandes、鴎E100:54)から取ったものである。『新浦島』の翻訳原本で、元作品は代表作の『リップ・ヴァン・ウィンクル』(Rip van Winkle)である。(山)
