ジョルジュ・オーネ『製鋼技師』のドイツ語訳。下巻最終頁に「明治十八年三月十五日夜読了独逸国来責府谿街賃舎燈下」との書入れがあり、ドイツ留学中、ライプチヒで読まれた本であることが分かる。作者オーネはフランスの小説家・劇作家で、『独逸日記』(全集35巻)明治18年(1885)8月13日の条には「仏蘭の名匠」として言及されている。「人生の戦い」という連作小説があり、本書もその一編である。(河・山)
