著者の班固は『漢書』の編者。本書は、漢代に儒教を国教とする際、五経の本文の文字及び意味に関して諸儒により交された講論をまとめたもの。鴎外は、全篇にわたり、朱筆で詳細に校訂を施しているが、これは書込み中に「荘本」とあることから、荘述租《そうじゅつそ》撰『白虎通義攷』を参照したと推測される。なお鴎外文庫には、荘述租撰『白虎通義攷』の刊本(鴎B60:1134)並びにその抄写本(鴎B60:1139)が所蔵されている。(渋)
