牧村光香が「野々口之翁」こと野々口隆正の口述に従って作った文法図解。隆正と光香がともに津和野の人であること、また本書が文久元年(1861)版行であることから、鴎外幼年時の学習に用いられた資料とも考えられる。ただし、欄外には朱筆によって『言海』(1889年)を参照した註が付されており、これが鴎外の筆跡であるかは断定しがたいものの、いずれにせよ後年にも活用された資料であろう。特記すべきは、裏貼りに用いられた紙に書かれている断片的な文章である。糊付されているため直接見ることはできないが「四歳森林太郎」、「森篤二郎三歳」の署名が透けて見える。本文は江戸末期に幼児用学習教科書として用いられた「指南車」物の一種で、兄弟は地理に関わる部分を書写している。表面・裏面ともに、鴎外個人のみならず、幕末維新期の藩士子弟が言語を獲得してゆく過程の一端を窺わせる貴重な資料と言えよう。(多)
