資料の解説

中国古代の怪事異聞や言語事物などについて記録した書物。書入れの多くは、本文の内容と類似性を持つ逸話の抄出である。『捜神記』や『山海経』、『孟子』や『蒹葭堂雑録』の名が見えるほか、近世後期の儒者で私塾咸宜園を開いたことで知られる広瀬淡窓や明治初期に活躍した漢学者石津灌園らの詩が引用されている。また、巻七の一丁裏に注記された「欧州小説」とは、『イソップ童話』中の狼少年の話である。「明治十四年十一月廿二日牽舟居士以西域記校訂(後略)」(続集巻四、十丁裏)との記述から、明治14年(1881)の冬、鴎外が20歳の時の書入れと分かる。同年7月に大学を卒業後、12月に陸軍に出仕するまでの間、鴎外は進路が定まらず、様々な道を模索したとされる。浪人時代の鴎外の動向を知る上でも、本資料は重要である。(合)
