資料の解説

『翁草』は、其蜩翁こと神沢貞幹の随筆。『翁草』はもと200巻に及ぶ大著であるが、著者の生前、天明4年(1784)に、本書が抄出本として刊行された。抄出であるため、鴎外『高瀬舟』に用いられた「流人の話」、『興津弥五右衛門の遺書』に用いられた諸記事は、本資料に含まれていない。遊び紙には、鴎外自筆で、大坂・文栄堂刊の異本が存すること、文栄堂刊本が本書の再刊本であることを述べている。本文の書入れは、すべて異本との校合である。小説創作の材料に用いるだけでなく、随筆そのものにも深い関心を抱いていたことがわかる資料である。(多)
