資料の解説

『荀子』は、中国古代の思想家荀子の考えをまとめた書物。荀子は儒家の代表的人物であり、性悪説を主張したことで知られる。朱筆の書入れが鴎外の手になるものであり、本文の語句などをドイツ語の言葉と対照させながら読んでいたことがうかがえる。墨による書入れは別人のものであろう。本書は、題簽や表紙などから分かるように、鴎外自らが製本を行っている。書入れの部分の上端が丁の上辺よりも高くなっているが、これは、化粧裁ちをした際に書入れ部分を残すため、鴎外自身が施した工夫と考えられる。(合)
