複数の文献資料を抄写したノートで、全丁が鴎外の自筆にかかる。題名にある「嶽林寺」とは、大分県日田市に現存する松陽山岳林寺のことである。本書の内容は「大分県豊後国日田郡光岡村大字友田太平興国松陽山岳林永昌禅寺由緒」、「参考太平記明極禅師参内」、「龍門夜話」の3部からなるが、そのいずれもが鎌倉時代に元から渡来して岳林寺を開山した禅僧、明極楚俊《みんきそしゅん》に関係する資料であることから、鴎外が彼に何らかの興味を抱いていた可能性が考えられる。なお、鴎外は明治33年(1900)6月5日から6日にかけて、徴兵視察のために日田に滞在していたことがある。(出)
