滝沢馬琴の文化12年(1815)刊の読本で、本書は明治16年(1883)の後印本。明治16年は活版印刷の普及と予約出版の流行により戯作復刻ブームが始まった頃で、その口火を切ったのが本書をはじめとする馬琴の読本の再版であった。本書はもと3冊として刊行されたが、鴎外によって1冊に合綴されている。その際、各冊の口絵が全て巻頭に集められ、その後に「皿皿郷談総目」と題された鴎外自筆の目次が綴じられている。また、「姓氏」と記された人名を整理して印した紙片や、作中の出来事の年譜を記した紙片、合計4丁も合綴されている。明治14年(1881)、20歳で医学士の学位を得てからドイツに出発した明治17年(1884)頃までによく用いられた「医学士森林太郎図書之記」の蔵書印が押されているので、読んだのもその時期であろう。(小)
