五巻本『風姿花伝』と密接な関係にあるが、個別に伝授された秘伝。ただし、宝山寺蔵の世阿弥伝書『花鏡』の本奥書によれば、世阿弥自身が応永三十一年（1424）の時点で、風姿花伝第一年来稽古条々から第七別紙口伝までを一括して捉えている。第七別紙口伝については、応永二十五年（1418）に世阿弥が元次（元雅の幼名か）に相伝した系統の第七別紙口伝があり、その奥書からそれ以前に弟の四郎に相伝した本があることが知られる。本書がその四郎相伝の本と推定され、元次本と区別するために「古本別紙口伝」とも称され、応永十年頃の成立と推測されている。本文を比較すると、本書には第一条末尾に「花」の理論の比喩として立花に言及した一節があることなど、異同がみられる。
もともとは粘葉装だったが、濃紺地に沙綾形花模様緞子表紙の大和綴の単葉装に改装されている。第一丁表に「花伝第七別紙」と外題を墨書してあり、これがもとの表紙だったらしい。片面八行で書かれた本文には、鉤印・振仮名・傍漢字・濁点・句読点が朱筆で加えられている。
内容は８箇条からなり、能の芸の魅力を「花」に譬え、同じ所に停滞しないことで生まれる面白さや珍しさと一体のものだと論じる。そして多くの芸を身につける必要性や、役者人生を通した各年代の花、秘事の重要性、能を極めるための因果関係、観客と時に応じた芸のあり方などを説く。
Kaden Daishichi Besshi kuden (Secret teachings conveyed in another book): Consisting of eight articles, this text compares the appeal of Noh performance to that of a flower, arguing that the interest and rarity that arise from not stagnating in one place are integral to the performance. It also discusses the necessity of mastering many performing arts skills, the importance of keeping stage teachings secret, the cause-and-effect relationship that creates the appeal of theatre, and the appropriate form of artistic styles appropriate for audiences at different times.
